ABOUT ME

I am a journalist whose career has spanned the U.S. power centers of Silicon Valley, Washington and Wall Street.

These days I teach news writing and editing as a professor of practice in the Donald P. Bellisario College of Communications at Penn State University.

I came to Penn State from Bloomberg News, where I conceived, wrote and edited explainers on complex topics as a senior editor on the Bloomberg Explains team. Before that, helped run the home page on Bloomberg’s digital platforms. I spent the previous five years editing investigative projects and legal news.

I was also an editor and reporter at The New York Times for more than a decade, covering Wall Street and Washington.

I covered information technology in the early days of the Internet explosion and taught journalism at George Washington University and Fordham University.

I’m a graduate of Stony Brook University, where I advise my college newspaper on financial matters.

I also provide free, one-on-one counseling to disadvantaged journalism students across the country as part of the Media Mentors / Journalism Mentors network.

I earned my master’s degree from the Newhouse School at Syracuse University and completed my formal training in intermediate Python and Pandas for data reporting.

Here is my résumé (PDF). Email me using the form below.
